While most main dealers would frown on it, getting a cheap car service makes good sense, especially for older or out of warranty vehicles.
A cheap car service from a local garage is usually a fraction of the cost of a regular service by a main dealer or franchise while covering most of the same maintenance and vehicle safety points. This is usually because of the lower operating costs of the local mechanic.
After all, the main dealer usually has a large showroom in a prime location to pay for, as well as top rates of pay for their factory trained mechanics. And all this additional cost is passed on to you, the customer.
So is a cheap service really so inferior to a main dealers? In my opinion, generally not. Here’s what you should expect from an average cheap car service:
Oil and Oil Filter Change
A regular oil and filter change will keep your engine running smooth, with less wear and tear during those vital first few minutes starting from cold. It also helps to remove potentially damaging contaminants from the engine that could cause damage if left there long term, such as minute pieces of metal swarf.
Spark Plugs And Fuel Settings
Checking and setting the spark plugs and fuel system for maximum efficiency can make your engine run more efficiently, saving you money on wasted fuel. Modern fuel injection systems combined with the correct spark plug gap will ensure that the vehicle is running smoothly and as the manufacturer intended.
Brakes And Tire Safety
As the only part of the vehicle that is in contact with the road, your tires play a vital part in the safety of you and your passengers. The garage will usually check for tread wear, correct pressures and that there are no cuts or danage to the tire. Your brakes should be checked for efficiency and pad wear, replacing if necessary.
Fluid Checks
Most drivers are surprised at just how important fluids play in the running and safety of their vehicles. A service will generally look at a number of fluids, including coolant levels, brake fluid, screen wash and battery electrolyte (if required) as well as lubricating hinges.
Of course, every garage is different, so it’s worth asking them what’s included in their service and making a special request of anything missing from their list that you feel is important.
